I’ve given more than 6 Reasons Why Bodybuilders Should Drink Smoothies and Raw Juices Daily, and pointed you to some resources and sites where you can buy your equipment, too. So now I thought I’d give you some actual recipes to try (you’ll need a Juicer and a trustworthy Blender
for these recipes).
Although these smoothies can be drank any time of the day, I handpicked these recipes especially for pre and post bodybuilding workouts. The first three of these recipes are adopted from Jason Vale’s book, The Juice Master Keeping it Simple: Over 100 Delicious Juices and Smoothies. I just made a few variations to suit our muscle-building purposes.
When we exercise, we lose a lot of minerals, nutrients, bodily fluids, etc. They need to be replaced as soon as possible, and a good way to ensure this happens is for you to have a post-workout meal handy.
The following recipes are designed to give you optimum nutrition and help your system recover quickly and naturally – perfect for your natural bodybuilding requirements!
For your convenience, I strongly recommend you buy a Vacuum Flask so you can store your smoothie in it, and take it with you to the gym. (The Vacuum Flask
keeps the smoothie fresh and cold, so that very little of the nutrients are lost.) Another handy tip: why not make 2 servings, and drink one serving before you leave for the gym, then take the rest with you so you can drink it after your kick-ass bodybuilding workout.
Oh – and do your best to use organic and fairtrade fruits and vegetables as much a possible.

Protein Power Smoothie
For all you Protein fanatics out there, you’ll be glad to know that this smoothie contains ALL of the essential amino acids needed for muscle building (because of the superfood Spirulina Powder). On top of that, this smoothie contains healthy doses of calcium, iron, zinc, and boron.
So what? Well, Calcium, Zinc and Boron are good for your bones; Zinc is vital in the maintenance of a strong immune system, and aids your system for a faster muscle recovery; Iron is essential for a healthy blood; Boron also helps produce natural steroids in your body!
Ingredients
- 1/4 small pineapple (peeled)
- 1/2 lime (peeled)
- 2 apples
- 1/2 avocado (make sure it’s ripe – avocado is ripe when it yields to the touch if you give it a light squeeze)
- 1 banana, sliced into smaller chunks
- 1/4 teaspoon Spirulina Powder
- ice cubes
- 1 teaspoon bee pollen
Juice the apples, lime and pineapple. Put the rest of the ingredients in the blender and pour the juice in the Blender. Blend until smooth.
(Note: If you don’t like the taste of Spirulina Powder, you can get them in capsule form as well)
Muscle Aid
This smoothie is rich in anti-oxidants and has most of the Vitamin Bs, C, E, Beta Carotene, including Folic Acid and Niacin. The perfect blend of ingredients produces a concoction that will help the recovery of your muscles and immune system within a shorter period of time.
Ingredients
- 1/4 Pineapple
- 1 stick celery
- 3 inch thick slice cucumber
- 1 lemon, peeled
- 1 orange
- ice cubes
- 1/4 cup mixed frozen berries
- 1 banana, sliced
Juice the celery, cucumber, orange, lemon and pineapple. Put the rest of the ingredients in the Blender and pour the juice in Blender
. Blend until smooth.
Energy Booster Smoothie
This one is a great Pre-workout smoothie. The natural sugars and complex carbohydrates provide a steady, slow release of energy, perfect for fueling your bodybuilding workout!
Ingredients:
- 2 large bananas, cut into smaller pieces
- 4 tbsps live low fat natural yoghurt or Organic Raw Maca Powder
- 250 ml fresh Pineapple Juice – not from concentrate. Juice the pineapple yourself if possible
- 1 teaspoon bee pollen
- Juice of 1 big orange
- ice cubes
Put all ingredients in a Blender then blend until smooth.

A Smoothie a day keeps injuries away
Dairy-free Berry Banana Smoothie
Just like the Energy Booster, Berry Banana will give you the natural high from the sugars and carbs, but it also offers the added benefits from nature’s top body healer, blueberries.
Ingredients:
- 2 large bananas, cut into smaller pieces
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
- 1/2 lime (peeled)
- 150 ml apple juice, or juice of 3 Apples
- ice cubes
- 100 ml Orange Juice, or Juice of 2 Oranges
Put all ingredients in a Blender then blend until smooth.
Bodybuilder’s Exotic CocoMango Cocktail
This one is my idea of a well-earned reward for completing a deadly kick-ass workout. Bodybuilder’s Exotic CocoMango Cocktail is full of vitamins and minerals that builds your blood, cleanses your body, stimulates the immune system, disinfects the body, destroys free radicals, flushes toxins from the body, and apparently mango even reduces body odor!
Ingredients:
- 1 chopped ripe mango
- ice cubes
- 1 cup fresh meat of young coconut (frozen is good too)
- 1 apricot
- 1/2 cup pineapple (peeled and cubed)
Blend all ingredients together until smooth.
Pour in wide-mouthed glasses and garnish with chopped pistachios or almond slivers or dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg. Sit in the jacuzzi, put your feet up, and enjoy while having your back massaged… Aaaahhh. The perfect ending to a killer workout!
